Marketing 101 Where To Start

Marketing 101 Where to Start

If you plan to do any marketing in this day and age you must consider online marketing. This does not mean you need to be an online expert nor have the best web site but it does mean when someone searches for you they can find you.
So when you search for you what is found? Hopefully they find good business related stuff only. What does your Facebook contain? What does Twitter contain? What does your LinkedIn contain?

So before you do anything else think about this…when a potential customer searches for you what persona do you want them to find?

Now go out there and clean up your social media to only present those things and nothing else.

Personally I use Facebook for only personal items but I also only add those personal items that I’d want my customers to find. I’m very Spartan when it comes to posting.

LinkedIn is geared toward business only so I only add business related information and my posts are serious and customer focused.

Now you can focus on a web site. I was in IT for 30 years and web sites are easy for me and they can be for you too. But before you start have a plan. The best plan is this: what do you want your customers to see?

Recently my wife bought an existing massage business that was 4 years old. It was run my some Chinese folks who did not do a good job of naming it nor decorating it so we had some work cut out for us. Firstly we made a plan – we want the business to be a reputable professional business. We needed to keep the name but improve it so we went from Well-Come Spa to Wellcome Professional Massage and Sports Therapy. We eliminated any ambiguity that could be connoted due to the name. Next we created a web site with just a few pages so people could find us. The pages were just who we are and what we do with a few key words used repeatedly. Keywords help the search engine find you and rank you. We chose Massage, Sports Therapy, and our town as the key words we used over and over again in the few paragraphs of text on our site.

For my next post I will go into web presence and more details about SEO and search rankings.

Happy Marketing!
